Stasis is a suspension of biological processes to prolong physical health in an extreme resting state. Stasis is also referred to as hypersleep, as well as a variety of slang terms.
Stasis technology is an important feature of interstellar society, as crucial to human expansion and transportation as faster-than-light propulsion, because it allows humans to undertake long periods of travel without physical or mental stress, as well as requiring very little in the way of consumable resources. Many modern stasis units use chemical and electrical stimulation (via intravenous and intramuscular injection) to maintain the body and mind during extended suspension.
Experiments in physical stasis (suspending the body at an atomic level) are ongoing, but have not yet yielded practical technology.
